Tuesday, June 8 - 7:00 PM. Urban Gardening: A Quiet Revolution. Darrin Nordahl, an urban designer with the City of Davenport, Iowa, will present a compelling case for local government involvement in food production; a revolutionary idea that is taking root all over the United States. Mr. Nordahl will focus on three topics of concern. First, Mr. Nordahl will address major reasons that point to a need to provide low-cost and no-cost fresh produce: the rise in obesity and diabetes in America, the rising cost of fresh produce, the rise in pathogens in our fresh produce, and the long distance food travels to our markets. Second, Mr. Nordahl will provide specific examples of what municipalities and government officials are doing to address food insecurity by utilizing public spaces in their community. Municipal agriculture, as Mr. Nordahl describes, is the use of the abundant land under public control (parks, plazas, city squares, parking lots, and grounds around libraries, schools, government offices and even jails) to grow food for community wide health and prosperity .Finally, Mr. Nordahl will advocate the need for incorporating an edible education into our school curricula to counteract the rise of food illiteracy. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Moline Public Library, The Sierra Club Eagle View Group, and Keep Moline Beautiful.
